Haydock 15:50 - Stay In The Game
Over at the swamp that was Haydock, there was a competitive little maiden between 3 horses who each brought some very respectable and potentially future group form to the table. The winner, Otto Flash was 6th on debut in a strong maiden at Doncaster with a very healthy purse on offer that was won stylishly by God’s Window and had At Vimeiro in 5th, a horse who Jane Chapple-Hyam deemed good enough to run in the Royal Lodge. The second, Move On In was 4th on debut to Under The Sun who has twice finished 2nd to two certain group performers in the shape of Ancient Wisdom and Al Musmak. The eyecatcher was 3rd at Thirsk on debut to Boiling Point who was a short head behind the impressive Alyanaabi in a group 3 on his next start. The punters sent Move On In off as favourite with Stay In The Game a 15/8 chance and jockey Jason Hart managed to get short of room on the inside rail but stayed on again to make inroads in the final furlong suggesting with a clear run, he could have been second and maybe even won. I think there’s more to come from this son of Too Darn Hot who could well be winning a maiden over 7f/1m before the year is out, the form of his first two starts looks fairly strong.
Newmarket 16:15 - Chorus
14:40 Haydock - Spoof
An absolute legend in the sprinting game, Spoof ran a stormer on Saturday. He finished a rapidly closing second behind Iain Jardine’s Never Dark (which was carrying zero weight at all). Spoof adores his racing and acts well on bad ground, therefore the tail end of the season could see him pull off a quick (soft ground) double. His handicap mark is extremely high for an 8yo, but he seems to be in fine fettle.
He’ll no doubt continue running some huge races this season.
16.20 Chester - Broken Spear
A stalwart of Tony Coyle’s operation, Broken Spear looks to be winding up again after a short break.
Broken Spear absolutely adores bad ground and ran a nice race on Saturday considering he had some in running trouble. His mark isn’t too kind but I imagine his ability to act on soft/heavy towards the back end of the season could mitigate that issue. I’m sure Tony Coyle will find a race or two for him to win before the seasons over.
16.35 Epsom - Soigneux Bell (Sunday)
Gary Moore’s French recruit was seemingly given an impossible task on UK debut against Roger Varian’s Strong Impact (1/5fav) over 10f. He was obviously never going to win that race considering he won in France over 15 1/2f but he convinced me that he’s certainly got plenty of ability. Although he raced on the flat on Sunday, I’d like to imagine Gary Moore will try him over both codes for the forseeable and he’s potentially something to look forward to, whether that’s in soft ground staying races or over hurdles.
